Twentieth Century America

manhattan

Some twentieth century American novels.

1) On the Road, Jack Kerouac

2) The Sheltering Sky, Paul Bowles

3) The Human Stain, Philip Roth

4) The Adventures of Augie March, Saul Bellow

5) Sophie’s Choice, William Styron

6) The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck

7) The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton

8) Beloved, Toni Morrison

9) The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald

10) Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Truman Capote

11) The Native Son, Richard Wright

12) Another Country, James Baldwin

13) Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison

14) Two Serious Ladies, Jane Bowles. The brilliant band Venus Bogardus wrote a great song about this novel.

NOTE: There’s no Hemingway here because I’ve already put him on the Battles list.

15) The Jungle, Upton Sinclair

16) The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger

17) The Sound and the Fury, William Faulkner

18) U.S.A, John Dos Passos – is actually worth reading, in spite of its size. It’s not a total success but still interesting.
